A lab website that looks like the science it represents
Most academic lab pages live as a tab inside a department site, lose every visual fight with the institutional template, and read like a CV in HTML. Amodio Lab wanted the opposite — a standalone, custom-domain presence with a real visual identity, the lab's people up front, and the science explained in a way that doesn't require already being in the field.
At a glance
- Launched: April 2019
- Domain: amodiolab.org (independent of the host institution's CMS)
- Services delivered: Web design, web development, content structure, ongoing hosting and security
- Visual direction: Bold color palette, clean type system, photography-led personnel section
The challenge: the institutional template wasn't working
Department-hosted lab pages share a common ceiling: the template is the template, the colors are the colors, and the lab is one of dozens of subdirectories in someone else's information architecture. For a lab building a national reputation, that's a real cost — every visitor lands inside someone else's brand before they get to the lab's.
Amodio Lab needed a site with the visual confidence of the work itself, on a domain the lab controls.
The solution: custom domain, bold identity, content that breathes
A standalone presence on amodiolab.org
The site lives at its own domain, with a build that isn't beholden to a department template. That single decision changes the visitor experience: from "subdirectory of an institution" to "destination."
A bold, distinctive visual system
Color, type, and layout all push past the safe academic default. The result reads as confident and modern without losing the seriousness the science requires — the kind of site a graduate applicant remembers after closing the tab.
Lab personnel up front
The team page is a real introduction, not a roster. Photography-led, with each member's role and contributions surfaced clearly. For prospective collaborators and students, the people are the lab — and the site treats them that way.
Research presented in plain language
Active research initiatives are organized so a peer can find publications fast and a curious outsider can read past the abstract. The structure scales as the lab's portfolio grows.
Hosting, security, and ongoing care
Like the rest of our research-side work, the site stays patched, stays secure, and stays available — including SSL renewals and the day-to-day plumbing the lab shouldn't have to think about.
The outcome
The Amodio Lab site has been carrying the lab's web presence since 2019, on a custom domain, with a visual identity that doesn't apologize for being a research site. It's the kind of low-noise, high-quality piece of infrastructure that quietly shapes how a lab gets perceived for years — by collaborators, applicants, funders, and the broader research network.
