SoundHound and Shazam are the two most popular song identification apps out there. Although they both produce a similar result, but the way they allow you to do it is a bit different. SoundHound actually lets you sing or hum the song you want to identify and Shazam doesn’t. We tested how well that feature worked against Shazam only being able to recognize songs in it’s database:

The Results:
It turns out that it’s sing or hum option is not very good. It didn’t even recognize a cover song available on iTunes that Shazam did recognize. Over the time we spent using the apps, Shazam was faster and more likely to identify songs than SoundHound. SoundHound, however, does have “Live Lyrics” that lets you follow along as it recognizes what part of the song is being sung. That feature is really useful if the app can actually recognize the song. Both apps keep track of search results so you can go back and see music you’ve discovered but the best thing is just to have both apps installed.

The Paper Camera app allows you to shoot photos with different filters that simulate an animated/sketched look. We tested the Android version of the App. There are quite a few filters, but several provide very similar results. Old Printer looks like a higher contrast, black & white version of Half Ton. The difference is almost indecipherable. The same with Granny’s Paper and Bleaching. The latter is like a desaturated version of the former with a softened texture while Neon Cola looks like an inverted, color version of Con Tours. Comic Boom, Sketch Up, Pastel Perfect, and Gothan Noir are our favorites. They look the least like bad Photoshop filters, but results are really dependent on your subject and lighting as well and playing with the variable settings for each filter which includes Contrast, Brightness and Lines.

As far as performance, the app runs smoothly, only takes a second to capture a shot, and didn’t crash or have problems on the Samsung Vibrant it was tested on. There are some other free/ad supported apps out there that create similar effects, but this one has a more appealing UI.
